Meet the artists

More than 50 local artists for the 2025 Lower Hutt Art Trail have been selected to showcase their work at over 30 stops. The artists include painters, potters, print makers, collage artists, textile artists, weavers, glass artists, jewellery artists, wood and metal artists and mixed media. Their works can be viewed at both the artists' own studios and several galleries around the Hutt region. Read about the individual artists below.

Caitlin Thomas-Riley Rainbow Hub, High Street

Caitlin Thomas-Riley is a versatile illustrator working in styles such as anime, semi-realism, realism, and pixel art. She specializes in character design, world-building, and concept art for games, including weapons and props. Active in game jams, she contributes design, programming, and sprite work. Caitlin also runs a long-standing online roleplay server. Her commissions, often for strong female characters, come from clients in the U.S., U.K., and Japan. Notable work includes contributions to the Mianite Minecraft series and the 2025 US-NZ Power Up! Game Jam branding. Based in New Zealand, she's a member of the Hutt Art Society and a local painting group. From 2021 to 2024, she served as president of the Victoria University of Wellington Drawing Club.

Dorian Everard Te Mako Community Centre, Naenae

Dorian Everard (he/him) is a Naenae based watercolour artist who paints botanicals, fauna, and other oddities. Much of his work explores his experience with gender and his passion for conservation and social justice. What draws Dorian to watercolours is how the medium allows for such loose, expressive brush work alongside detailed layering techniques. He sells originals and fine art prints of his paintings, and makes stickers and greeting cards featuring his original designs.

The Dowse Art Museum was opened in 1971, and it has been pioneering the presentation of art forms and under-represented artists for more than 50years. “The Dowse is one of those art galleries that people love, even if they haven't been for years. Hutt Art Odlin and Huia Galleries

Hutt Art has been at the heart of the local creative community for over 60 years. Based on the corner of Myrtle and Huia Streets in Lower Hutt, this vibrant incorporated society provides a welcoming space for artists to meet, create, and exhibit their work. Members can join any of the many groups that meet regularly - from painting and printmaking to pottery, embroidery, and weaving - either working independently or with a tutor. Hutt Art also runs the Odlin Gallery and Huia Gallery, both showcasing new exhibitions every fortnight. Kererū Artists Collective Wesley Rātā Village, Naenae

The Kererū Artists Collective is a community-led group made up of various artists who use space at Wesley Rātā Village (formerly Wesleyhaven) to gather and create art. Some are residents of the village, some are local Naenae artists, and others attend programmes or groups hosted by Wesley Community Action. The Lower Hutt Art Trail is a great opportunity to exhibit, as well as to share what's happening at Wesley Rātā Village as it evolves into a new, vibrant, intergenerational community, with a key focus on accessibility to the arts.

Kererū Artists Collective
Leon Ramakers Petone Historic Police Station & Jail

Leon trained as a Graphic Designer, but is self-taught in Fine Arts. A lot of inspiration comes from his surroundings, and he prefers to paint realism, particularly New Zealand landscapes, flora and fauna, though he also paints the occasional abstract. He works mainly in oils and acrylics. Leon has exhibited at the Hutt Art Gallery, NZ Academy of Fine Arts, Artspace Gallery in Petone, Min Kim's Fine Art Gallery in Christchurch, as well as other venues. He has won various art awards at art shows around the region, and has artworks in many private collections throughout New Zealand, as well as some in Australia, US, Japan and The Netherlands.

Louise Thomas is a painter, wildlife photographer, and writer. Now working primarily in oils, her art captures life's fleeting moments with humour and energy. Her love for animals permeates each piece, inviting viewers to share in the special connection she forges between art and nature. Michael Haynes Somerford House, Woburn

Michael Haynes, a British illustrator now based in Wellington, New Zealand, is passionate about art and graphic design. Along with his deep-rooted creative interests, he has an obsession for music and film, which often influences the work he produces. Michael prides himself on his loose and lively linework, stylized comic book aesthetic and a bold use of colour. "I'm constantly learning to develop and refine my imagery". Michael will be showing a new selection of prints and greetings cards on the 2025 trail. Michael runs the popular Sketch Club programmes at Hutt City Libraries. Commissions welcome.

MIX is a mental health community day service in the Hutt Valley offering programmes in art and wellbeing. Their motto is "Connecting, Creating, Living". They exist so that people who experience mental health challenges can: Connect to form shared communities; and create opportunities for growth in wellbeing and art. Their programmes focus on supporting the recovery process for people with mental health needs. They encourage optimum functioning, growth, independence, and connections within the community.
They have two daily programmes: The Creative Space Programme and the Wellbeing and Community Programme.
They have three art rooms offering a wide range of visual art workshops for beginners through to experienced artists. This includes painting, ceramics, drawing, carving and mosaics.

Naenae Menz Shed And Guild of Woodworkers Wellington

The Naenae Menz shed is teaming up with the Wellington Woodworkers Guild to exhibit a range of wood craft items made at the Menz shed and in the member's workshops. The items will be for sale and cover a range of wood craft such as toys, wood carvings, furniture items, and a wide range of wood turned items. Throughout the Art trail, members will be present to demonstrate various woodworking and technical skills. These will include wood turning, green woodworking, and the application of laser techniques to wood enhancement and decoration. All are welcome.

Emmi loves to create heavily textured, organic, slightly abstract pieces that evoke thought or emotions. "I find beauty in the imperfection of things - rough edges and symmetry that is a bit off." She takes everyday materials such as pieces of fabric, wooden offcuts, wire and paint, and turns them into something that is thought-provoking and intriguing - forms that depict the ordinary in an un-ordinary, tactile way.

Jonathan has been sculpting in bronze since 1992. In that time he has had numerous dealer gallery exhibitions and worked on multiple project/commissions. Philippa Hopkins is a lampwork artist based in Naenae. Her love of glass began in Bristol. She initially started playing around with making jewellery using lampwork beads, then she stumbled across a studio that offered lessons in how to make them and the rest is history! Jo had been working as a professional hand embroiderer for more than 30 years. She teaches all over New Zealand with regular trips to Australia to both exhibit and teach. In 2017, Jo published her first book, "Stitch People", later released as "Creative Thread".

Local heritage artist Joy is of Niue, Samoa, Hawaii descent. With her first major public ie pili art exhibition at PATAKA Porirua in 2024, her work explores contemporary textile to honour the art of ie pili Niue, a tradition passed down to her by the matriarchs of her magafaoa /family. The studio/pop-up gallery is accessible through a security gate, which is clearly signposted.

Lisa Floris has been a patchwork artist for a few years now. During Covid, she gained a diploma in textile design and has decided to become a full time artist this year. The 2025 Lower Hutt Art Trail will be her first Open Studio. "I create quilts, up cycle whatever I can, and collage, stitch, dye or weave pieces that are inspired by every day things - a tui singing, sunshine, or my mokopuna. I love making stuff, and encouraging others to find their artistic groove too."

Simone has spent two decades making superheroes and villains look good - fabricating weird and wonderful costumes and costume props for major motion pictures, indie theatre productions, and everything in-between. She has a heavy focus on sustainable textile practices and enjoys sharing her processes and love of all things craft, art, and fabric.

All of Anna's pottery is handmade in her studio on the Western Hills. She makes domestic ware and sculpture. All her ceramic work is predominantly wheel thrown and tends to favour simple forms and clean lines. "I like to use New Zealand clay as much as possible and fire in both electric and gas kilns." In 2022, she completed a Level 6 Diploma in Arts and Design majoring in Ceramics at Otago Polytechnic.

Born in Germany, Johannes Mueller-Welschof moved to New Zealand in 2008 as a product designer with an MD in textile design. He worked for several companies, specialising in textile accessories and corporate fashion/workwear. Now based in Lower Hutt, he is a member of the Hutt Art Society and completed an Advanced Diploma in Art and Creativity at the Learning Connexion in 2018. His work spans photography, print-making, collage, painting, and mixed media. Influences include René Magritte, Robert Rauschenberg, M.C. Escher, and Andy Goldsworthy. His art is held in collections across New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and Japan. He regularly exhibits and contributes to community projects like the Lower Hutt Art Trail.

Lesley joins Philothea Flynn and Fiona Christeller at Studio Toru. Lesley works with a diverse range of media to create 3D artwork and jewellery. She enjoys developing the concepts and narratives around each series of work and repurposing materials in unexpected ways to create unique, one-off items. Lesley also works with wax to cast rings in sterling silver and brass. Inspired by reknowned New Zealand artists, she describes these rings as “wearable sculpture, cocktail rings for the 21st Century”. Lesley's work has found homes around the world and she has exhibited at Webbs, Artis and Rayner Brothers Gallery.

Niki Pennington, a British-born, award-winning artist based in Eastbourne, holds an MFA from the Schule Für Gestaltung Basel and a Visual Communications degree from Wellington Polytechnic School of Design. Niki explores the interplay between memory and perception through paint, colour, and layered graphic structures. Pepper Raccoon is a illustrator and merch designer based out of a micro-warehouse in Lower Hutt. She is well known for her nature-inspired enamel pins, stickers, and apparel designs, sold in eco-sanctuaries and shops around the country, and has a fine art background that she brings to her original digital designs. She is passionate about making art affordable and accessible, as well as bringing an original, alternative voice to the New Zealand nature art market. Andrea Mae Miller Tower Top Studio, Eastbourne

Andrea Mae Miller is a Fine Art Printmaker, working out of her home studio in the hills above Eastbourne. Born in Whangarei in 1980, Andrea grew up living at the beach on Northland's beautiful Tutukaka coast. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic in 2002 and after graduation established her studio, St Peter's Thumb, in Petone. In 2006, she spent a year living and working in Copenhagen, Denmark, taking time to explore the other side of the world, and to practise being a stranger. Now Andrea lives in Eastbourne, Lower Hutt, with her husband and two daughters.

Jolene Maciak is a visual artist whose creative journey began with a degree in Sculpture from the University of the Arts, London, and evolved through a career in teaching secondary Art and Design.
