Artist Application 2026

Applications are open for the 2026 Art Trail, taking place 17-18 October. Artists must be based in Lower Hutt. To be considered, please complete the application form and email us a selection of sample images of your work. For successful applicants, a non-refundable stop fee of $135 for a solo studio (or $75 per artist in a shared studio) is payable upon acceptance. This contribution helps cover the cost of your listing on the website, inclusion in the printed Art Trail guide, and a flag for display outside your studio. Applications close Friday, 1 May 2026. Early applications are encouraged.

Terms and Conditions

Please read all the conditions carefully before completing the application form to make sure you fit the criteria and what your obligations and responsibilities are. Applications close Friday, 1 May 2026.

Lower Hutt Art Trail 2026 dates are Saturday 17 October and Sunday 18 October, 10am to 4pm.

Opportunities for participants

The opportunities the event offers are:

  • For artists, the Art Trail is an opportunity to interact with visitors, to showcase your talent, to sell your work and to draw visitors to the district, to the mutual benefit of all.
  • For visitors, the Art Trail is an opportunity to view and interact and purchase work directly from a variety of artists from around the district and to experience what Lower Hutt artists have to offer.
Categories

The categories are as follows, please select the category that best fits your situation:

  • Artist in Studio: you are a “working Lower Hutt artist” with a studio in Lower Hutt, where you create most of your artwork and where visitors can see you creating your work. You will be in attendance at your studio for the duration of the opening hours of the Lower Hutt Art Trail.
  • Artist in Shared Space:
    • Shared Studio: Up to 3 artists (Pop-Up spaces may have more) sharing one studio site specifically for the entire duration of the Art Trail. All Artists in the Shared Space will be in attendance at your site for the duration of the opening hours of the weekend of the Lower Hutt Art Trail.
    • Pop-Up Spaces: The Committee will endeavour to assist artists in identifying a suitable pop-up venue where possible; however, availability cannot be guaranteed. Artists remain responsible for securing, setting up, and managing their exhibition space. Any costs associated with pop-up venues (including hire fees) are the responsibility of the artist and are additional to the standard stop fee.
  • Exhibition Space:
    • Established gallery: you must be a gallery whose main business is art and you must be open to the public at regular times during the year. During the Art Trail most of the artwork in your gallery will be by Lower Hutt artists.
    • Art Society/Club or Guild: you are an incorporated society that supports a range of member artists, who live in Lower Hutt. Some or most of your members will be emerging artists or hobby artists.

While artists who have work in an Exhibition Space do not need to be in attendance for the Art Trail it is highly recommended that they do attend to interact with visitors, and we recommend that Exhibition Spaces encourage this.

Fees

Artist in studio - $135

Artist in shared studio (up to 3 artists) - $75 per artist

Applicants will be invoiced upon confirmation of their studio / exhibition space being approved. All fees must be paid within seven days from the date of the invoice, unless by prior arrangement.
